One of the most rewarding parts of our business comes from installing films to stop birds from colliding with windows. This is because sadly bird strikes on windows on highrises here in San Antonio and around the world are a problem and it feels good to be part of the solution. More than a billion birds die each year from these horrible and unnecessary run-ins. There are a handful of solutions out there already but, as you will see, window film is the most effective and affordable.
Solutions to Stopping Birds From Flying Into Windows
As bird strikes on highrise and homes become more and more of an issue worldwide, more solutions have come into play to solve them. These include:
- Marking the outside of windows with soap or tempera paint
- Putting sun catchers, mylar strips, masking tape, or sticky notes on windows
- Hanging “zen” curtains/Acopian Bird Savers
- Installing mosquito screens over windows
- Covering exterior glass with netting
Each of these methods works a little but really only feasible on homes. None of them are overwhelmingly effective and certainly not on the scale needed for commercial properties with thousands of feet of glass. Furthermore, experimenting gets expensive and alters the appearance of homes and commercial properties. Bird deterrent window film, on the other hand, works for both commercial and residential properties, is nearly invisible and affordable too.
What is Bird Deterrent Film?
Also called “fretted” films, bird deterrent films are clear films with tiny dots in a grid-like pattern embedded on them. This pattern of dots is visible to birds but not as visible to humans from a distance. The bird perceives the pattern as an obstacle because it breaks up the reflection of open sky off the glass. So, the birds avoid windows instead of mistaking them for the sky and trying to fly through them. They are excellent for highrises here in San Antonio and homes alike and come with other window tinting benefits like UV protection. Best of all they save the lives of birds and save business owners money on clean up and repairs when bird strikes occur.
